Mystery–
In all my years
of playing, I do not think I have ever really done a true “mystery” in one my
games. There have been surprises,
betrayals, and even figuring out and catching who killed someone or stole
something, but were they mysteries?
Anyway, for
today’s word, I am going to do a call back to the world’s best gang of mystery detectives…
And I would
have gotten away with it, if it weren’t for you meddling kids.
We all know whom
the real detective of the group was and to honor that, I give you this
magic-item.
Jinkies
Glasses
This is a
pair of thick square black framed glasses.
•Anyone
wearing these glasses without attunement has terrible blurry vision and all
attacks and physical skill checks are made with disadvantage. Furthermore, If they are worn for more than a
few minutes, wearer gets terrible headaches and motion sickness, they cannot
concentrate or cast spells, and all rolls are made with disadvantage.
•Once
attuned to the glasses, wearer gains the following benefits:
1. +1 to Intelligence and Wisdom
2. +1 to Armor class and saves – this does
not stack with other protection magic items that are fashion accessories,
including rings and bracers of protection.
3. Wearer gains proficiency with Arcana,
History, Investigation, Perception, and Religion skills. If they are already proficient, they gain
expertise instead.
•1 time per
long rest – wearer can cast Comprehend Languages, Detect Magic, and a
non-divine Augury spells.
•1 time per
long rest – wearer can use a Find Clues ability. This takes 10-40 minutes of uninterrupted time
to review all available information, brainstorm ideas, make educated guesses
and extrapolate on a given subject or investigation. The more information and clues they have
gathered, the better the results.
The wearer
can then ask the DM one question they would like guidance or information on and
DM decides how successful they are and how or what they find or come up with.
•1 time per
game session, at the DM’s discretion can declare that wearer loses their
glasses and must search around on their hands and knees to find them. This takes 1D4 rounds, during which time the wearer
must exclaim, “My glasses. I can’t
see a thing without my glasses!” or some variation of it. Note, while they
search for their glasses, they cannot be targeted by attacks or spells. Wearer cannot purposely lose or take off
their glasses.
•Wearer says
“Jinkies” anytime they are surprised or startled and orange
becomes their favorite color to wear.
•High Level
Magic – Requires Attunement
Two final
thoughts on Scooby Doo and Velma.
1. When you get down to it, the Scooby
Doo cartoon could be pretty dark. Scooby
Doo taught us that the real monsters are always just humans in disguise and
that those villains are usually not really strangers, but instead people we
know and trust.
2. Velma has become quite the controversial
subject, especially for a 50-year-old cartoon character. From Velma fetishes,
nudity, and porn, to people obsessed with her sexual preferences, it is pretty crazy. All I can say is, "Jinkies."
