PROMPT
– Today’s entry
is for a unique magic sword, named Prompt Riposte.
This listing
is following the D&D magic item format, although it can likely be adapted
to fit any other fantasy system easily. I spend a lot of time and get some real
enjoyment out of designing interesting magic items for my homebrew games. I personally
use a different magic item rating system, based on the magic power of an item,
versus how easy it is to acquire. Perhaps
during a different day’s prompt this month, I will expand on the system I have
always used.

Prompt
Riposte
Weapon (Rapier, Scimitar, or Shortsword), Rare (Requires Attunement)
Regardless of blade type, this flashy sword is always of excellent
craftmanship. Wielders gain a +1 bonus to initiative, attack, and damage rolls
made while using this weapon. Additionally, they gain a +1 to their Armor Class
(AC) against attacks made by melee weapon wielding opponents while the blade is
in hand. They cannot use the +1 to initiative or AC if they are not actively using
the weapon that round. Prompt Riposte has 3 charges and regains 1D3 expended
charges at dawn.
Reaction. Wielder can expend 1 charge per round to gain
a second Reaction that round, which must be used to made a normal Opportunity
Attack or a special Counter Attack, as outlined below. If the weapon has zero
charges remaining, wielder is limited to their normal single Reaction, although
all other bonuses from the sword remain active.
If an opponent makes a melee attack against the wielder and
misses their AC by 1 point, the attack is blocked and the wielder can use a
reaction to make a single Counter Attack against that attacker. If they have not used their normal Reaction
that round, they can make the Counter Attack without expending a charge. Then, if they need to use a second reaction later
that same round to make an Opportunity or Counter Attack, they must use 1
charge from the weapon.
Prompt Riposte’s wielder can choose to expend 1 charge this
way, even if they have not yet used their normal Reaction that round and are
saving it potentially for a different Reaction usage later that round.
