Recent – Since my group’s Grimdark game ended, due to one of the players leaving, we started playing Shadowdark for a bit instead.  Originally the idea was for someone else to DM, but that didn’t work out and I am still DMing.

I created a small map of a world and so far, have run 3 different games set in the same place.  We are going to try to get to where we can play even if someone cannot make it to our normal every two-week game.

For one of the adventures, the sheriff of the capital city hired them to travel to a different city a couple of days away and help that sheriff and his deputy transport a wanted criminal, Dashing Dan Boyer back to the capital for trial. The king specifically wants to try this criminal, as he has mainly targeted the King’s Tax Collectors and other wealthy citizens.

The criminal had a gang of 10 members, which the sheriff was pretty sure would try to ambush and rescue him on the road, so the group was hired for extra guards. They did indeed ambush the group, then set up a trap at the inn where they were stopping for the night, and then finally set up road block on the road and brought in a gang of ferocious gnolls and hyenas to try to slaughter the group.

The initial ambush only involved a few of the gang members, attacking via ranged weapons, killing the deputy and one of the other guards.  They killed a couple of the gang members, but the spell caster managed to get away.  Luckily one of the group managed to get a good look at him as he was then posing as the bartender/inn owner’s brother when the group stopped for the night.  The gang had taken the innkeeper and two of his children as hostages, in the cellar and made the innkeeper’s wife and older daughter help run the inn and try to fool the group. They avoided eating the sleep poisoned food they were served, managed to sneak back into the inn later, ambush the gang members and even rescue the hostages before they were killed. The during the final showdown, the group’s mage got off a well-placed fireball, killing the gnoll leader and the shaman, who had control of an ogre he ensorcelled to attack the group.  Free of the shaman’s control, the ogre furiously attacked the nearest gnolls and ultimately helped the group, before fleeing himself back into the woods.

 

Anyway, it was an interesting adventure and challenge to the group.  Here is the gang’s wanted poster.
